Mark Lyken is creating a new body of work; a series of original paintings, a mural and a piece of music that he describes as “Abstract Mediations on the Digital World” during a residency with us this month. His first solo show will be called “The Loneliness Machines”, it explores his own and other’s feelings on our growing reliance and usage of social media websites and the impact on our “real” relationships. You can visit the gallery and see him at work throughout the residency (he finishes on the 5th Feb, so get your skates on) and you can take part by loading up your thoughts on the theme here. We would like to thank everybody who helped us to make 2011 so successful and fulfilling.

We achieved so much this year, from forming Team Recoat and doing our first print run, to the Rudimentary Perfection exhibition and Murals, to taking part in the Nottingham Street Art Festival to painting cars in Inverness...

We've been very lucky to take part in so many varied and exciting projects, none of which could of happened without generous help from so many people. The Artists, volunteers, sponsors, buyers, supporters, there are too may people to list here. You know who you are... A massive thank you from us.

IOTA x Team Recoat in Inverness

At the start of Dec 2011, Team Recoat were invited by IOTA to go to Inverness to paint a series of murals and to paint a collection of donated cars from the local community. You can see all the photos here. This project was part of Sublime at Rose Street Car Park. All of the artwork created was on the theme of Purgatory. Team members in attendance- Syrkus, Elph, Death Rattles, FiST, Kirsty Whiten, Mark Lyken and Rue Five.
Big thanks to Susan and Kirsten at IOTA for all their hard work making it happen.

We're off again! Team Recoat are heading up to Inverness to work with IOTA on a crazy few days of activity for the Sublime project. We're painting on the walls and on cars at the Rose Street Multi-storey car park, Elph is running a free workshop at IG:LU on Thurs evening followed by a free talk by artist, Kirsty Whiten and Recoat manager, Amy Whiten aswell as an exhibition of the sought after Team Recoat limited edition screen prints. On Friday the painting in the car park will continue and on Sat Kirsty Whiten, Mark Lyken, Syrkus and Death Rattles will be running more free workshops. Go sign up...

The Church of Ram was formed in the summer of 2009. It is a studio nestling between a complex of Baptist churches in the heart of Dalston, East London. It comprises of 9 artists, photographers, designers, textile designers, bike builders, leather workers and furry costume creators.....

She has created the most beautiful paintings to exhibit here at Recoat, aswell as painting the entire gallery space, painting a massive mural down at Kelvinbridge and another over at Boardwise on Dumbarton Road. Ema has arrived in Scotland, she is busily drawing and painting inside and outside of Recoat Gallery. The work for the exhibition is beautiful and intricate, a series of ink paintings with art deco-inspired backgrounds that incorporate various influences including typography, 90's hip-hop, and 70's science fiction.

Ema Solo Show

Ema began spray-painting the walls of her hometown, Montpellier (Fr) in the early 90's. Instantly hooked by graffiti, it wasn’t long before her works adorned buildings and trains throughout the South of France, Paris and Barcelona before moving across Europe and North America.
As a resident of New York for the past 10 years, Ema's work can be seen throughout the city, both inside and outside the gallery; from exhibitions in Chelsea, to wheat-pastes in Brooklyn and large-scale murals across Manhattan, Queens and the Bronx.
For this exhibition, titled Breuckelen (the original name for Brooklyn), Ema presents a series of original works celebrating a decade of soul-searching, creative explorations and one-hell-of-a-time in the city so good, they named it twice.
Brooklyn, we go hard.

Wow, we've had a cracking time running Recoat thus far. We've showed work from 5 continents, held 42 exhibitions at Recoat, and 15 at other spaces, and the Fool's Gold Tour and Rudimentary Perfection show have really been the icing on the cake!
This summer we celebrate 4 years of Recoat by launching Team Recoat, a collective of 10 Scottish artists who we rate massively for their excellent and well-crafted work. We've commissioned each of them to design a limited edition screen print, these will be on show next Friday alongside original paintings and drawings.
Exciting times!

The work is looking amazing and the murals across the city are mind blowing. We'll release the map of where they all are this weekend. Rudimentary Perfection

Our next exhibition, "Rudimentary Perfection" opens on 1st July 7-10pm. Mark Lyken has been a helluva busy and has brought together the UK's first comprehensive "Graffuturism" Exhibition. The exhibition pulls together an impressive group of notable international artists linked by their innovative spirit & shared graffiti heritage. The project has been heralded as one of the finest of its kind to take place anywhere in the world this year.

Each of these artists has ventured down unique paths in their post graffiti output & each offers a radical take on expressive, figurative & letter-based abstraction. These works, while differing in approach & execution retain the sense of movement, assured marks & imperfect beauty of graffiti itself.

The participating artists include SheOne, Duncan Jago, Jaybo Monk, Matt W. Moore, Augustine Kofie, Nawer, Morten Andersen, Poesia, Derm, and Mark Lyken. Yeah I know, too good! Can't wait.

Mutant Veneer is a solo show from FiST, it opens on the 20th of May 2011, 7-10pm.

FiST is an emerging Scottish artist. He has worked for many years as a graphic designer, his illustrations decorating many a flyer along the way. After only two years of focusing on creating exhibition work, his style and quality of work has reached an impressive level and he has exhibited prolifically now across the UK. The show w...ill feature painting, drawing, collage and sculpture.

FiST renovates the dead through altered Victorian photographs, their static gaze contrasting with his intricate illustrations of farm machinery, robots and distorted limbs, over-layed with blocked-in house-hold paint, acrylic or spray paint. He reinvigorates forgotten belongings; found, hoarded or scavenged signage and objects are given new life and meaning. His work toys with themes of past, future, anonymity and nostalgia.

“Mutant Veneer” gives us a glimpse of our own future redundant image, buried in digital archives, lost to memory, but there to fold. colour-in. delete. clone and replay.

Closing Elph down

On the 15th of May, Elph's highly popular exhibition, One One Three Three, is coming to an end. To mark what has been a hugely succesful show, we are holding a closing party we'd love all of our Recoat freinds to attend. Elph has been working away and we will be releasing a brand new limited edition screen print, each one hand finished and the 2nd in his series of "Sketchbook" zines. Make sure you get down early to get yours signed.
Elph will be on the premises and will be giving a short artist's talk at 4pm.
As ever our lovely friend Jenny Elliott at Different World Drinks has hooked us up and we have some tasty Blue Moon for your refreshment.

Unit 44

We headed down to Newcastle to catch up with some old friends and check out what the guys at Unit 44 have been up to.

Situated in the Hoults Yard Estate, the owners are looking to push a more creative angle for the spaces and Unit 44 have helped out by building an impressive collection of large scale murals from some of the best artists around today. The White Walls project has already worked with Roa, Kid Acne, She One, John Burgerman and most recently Insa (keep an eye on his blog for something epic coming soon).

The guys have plans for another 10 plus murals so when finished it will become a unique "gallery".

While there we also caught the launch night of an installation and collaborative print from Sickboy and Paul Insect, at onethirty3 which you can check out here.

With the perception that nothing happens north of London this is a really exciting project and definitely worth a visit.

Black Lodge opens on the 11th March, an exhibition from three exciting young Scottish artists, Estum, Macism and Soulrelics.

The exhibition represents the manifestation of a new subversive secret society - Black Lodge -embodying the philosophy, principles and approach that the three artists share in relation to wider notions of society, religion, culture and reality. These elements that have long been incorporated into their well-known mural productions will now be taken for the first time into a gallery context; including all new wall paintings, canvases and large scale sculpture within an elaborate installation built in the Recoat space.
